Fruit & Vegetables
(Paul Amess)
Usual Attendance at Market: Weekly
Amess Brothers fruit and vegetable business was started by Paul and Roger Amess back in 1978. Paul in particular always had an interest in gardening and horticulture, and the business stemmed from there. They began trading in a mobile van, ploughing any profit into growing their own produce and gradually purchasing enough stock to run market stalls, which Paul has been running singlehandedly for some years.
He has a stall at Shrewsbury market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, trades from his own home at Hemford Thursday mornings (8am – 1pm) and up until moving to Lydham he worked at Bishops Castle Friday market for the past 35 years. Paul has a large nursery at his home, where he grows a lot of his own fruit and vegetables. These always taste extra special and are very popular with customers. Paul purchases the rest of his goods twice a week, setting off in the early hours of the morning to source the best stock. Many customers are keen to buy local/British food, and in addition to his home-grown produce
Paul tries to source as much as possible from other growers he knows and trusts. Due to his many years in the business he is familiar with the best suppliers and a wide range of produce, and is usually able to obtain the best quality fresh fruit and vegetables at the lowest prices. He endeavours to keep his prices as low as possible for the customers whilst maintaining value, quality and variety. Paul is always very willing to discuss produce with customers, happily answering any questions they may have.
